    DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful art glass intaglio engraved polar bear is a very unique part of the Wildlife Collection.  The clear leaded crystal glass is 1 1/2" thick.  This makes the ice crystals hanging over the polar bear look so realistic.  The bear is so well executed that you can see the individual hairs on its coat.  This is truly a masterpiece of art glass.  The paper label is still on the right front lower corner and does show light wear on the paper.  It has 4 lines which say: "Mats Jonasson," "Signature Collection," "Handmade in Sweden," and "Full Lead Crystal."
The signature engraved on the bottom says: Mats Jonasson #152--This is difficult to read the number.

While this item is classified as used, the condition is superb.  There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or other hairlines.  When you look at the signature on the bottom and catch the light right, you can see some very light, short scratches from where the piece has been moved when displayed.
    DIMENSIONS:
The overall dimensions of the lead crystal are
    5 3/4" by 4 5/8" with a maximum thickness of 1 1/2".  Its heavy weighing in at 38.5 ounces.
    HISTORY/MARKS:
Fourteen year old Mats Jonasson's talent as a designer (a third generation Master Glass Craftsmen) attracted attention early, when he began work as an apprentice engraver at the glass works in 1959 after leaving school.  Over the next decades, he worked with many of the most respected contemporary glass artists in Sweden.  During this period, he developed a natural style of his own which he has perfected through his wild life collection.  What is now Mats Jonasson glassworks began as Maleras glassworks, which was founded in 1924 in Sweden.  Jonasson worked there from 1959-1969 and returned in 1975.  Eventually, he took over the company becoming managing director and chief designer.
