Large should fit most kids in the 9-12 month range. I made them for my my son but he was big (95%ile) and ended up being totally potty trained by 10 mos - so we only used a few of them a few times (as specified new versus used in each of the various lots I have available).
They are cotton fabric outer, cotton batting, and muslin and will absorb slightly more than the gerber-type undies but are roomy and adjustable enough to hold additional liner or a prefold. They are great for early potty training and generally giving a break from plastics and moisture rashes that may result from a baby who is too busy playing to give much clue about a wet diaper.
